La Botiga del Prat removes the toppings from most foods to promote free choice

Thanks to a network of local suppliers, access to the necessary products can be guaranteed

La Botiga del Prat has recently been able to remove the maximum limits on most of the food they serve, so that people and families can choose the amount they want to take away from each product, without restrictions.

From the beginning, La Botiga del Prat has operated with a points system. This allowed families to choose the amount they wanted to take of each product within certain margins. These margins were the caps, which defined the maximum amount that a family could take of each product, depending also on the number of people in the family. In addition, through these barriers it has been possible to guarantee access to food for all families, while ensuring that there is always an available and sufficient stock of the products that arrived through donations.

During these two and a half years, La Botiga has been creating a network of local and social and cooperative economy suppliers . This has allowed access to products that do not come from donations or surpluses, to increase purchases in the face of the drop in donations, and to be able to have more flexibility to adapt to the preferences and needs of the people who come to La Botiga.

Thanks to this network, essential products can be obtained and purchases can be adapted to the needs and preferences of families. Therefore, it has been possible to remove the barriers to most products and thus strengthen people’s decision-making capacity and freedom of choice .

However, some obstacles remain in products such as animal proteins, household cleaning and personal hygiene, pastries or special diets for budgetary reasons (costs are higher) and for nutritional and environmental reasons (avoid high consumption of fats and proteins).
